“Language is the archives of history”

The rain continues, but I love the sound. It distracts me, and I stop often to listen. Strangely, the rain seems to invite a sort of quiet, a perfect day for reading, for lying on the couch with a good book as raindrops provide the background music. I have nothing whatsoever scheduled for today. It's a grand feeling. It means I have another day all to myself. That may seem greedy as I now have many days like today, but for most of my life my days were scheduled with school, work, chores or...

A record will fall. Today's rain will make this the wettest March ever. Videos of roads still under water from the last deluge and of people walking in cellars covered by three feet of water from rivers which had overflowed were on the news last night. Those same rivers are in danger of overflowing again. If I had a roommate, I suspect the old mirror under the nose verification would have been necessary. I slept until 10:30. I don't remember the last time I did that. In my college years,...

"Nobody tears my city apart and gets away with it."

Palm Sunday is chilly. Overnight, the water in the dog's outside dish froze on the top in a thin layer. The rainwater made wells in the furniture cover between the deck chairs, and it froze. I saw my breath when I went out for breakfast. It may be spring, but it's not a spring day. When I only had a little money, I used to buy comic books at the 5&10 or at the drug store. Each had racks of comics in the fronts of their stores. Superman and all the other Action heroes were favorites, and I...

Some days I just feel lazy. I used to feel guilty being unproductive, but long ago I learned to revel in the sheer luxury of doing nothing. What are you up to today you ask. Well, I'll probably make my bed, will definitely wash up and brush my teeth, but then I'm done. Oops, I do have to fill the bird feeders, but, after that, I'm really done. I have a book, a few new magazines and a very comfy couch. Sounds like heaven to me. Saltines were my favorite crackers when I was a kid. They were good...

Time to pull out the mukluks. The rain just turned to a wet, heavy snow. It's a what are you doing here this time of year sort of snow. The pansies from the front steps are inside. They're hearty, but I figured I'd bring them in anyway, just in case. My dafs bloomed yesterday. At least the garden has a bit of sunny yellow. The weatherman says this won't last. I hope he's right. I'll welcome the rain he's predicted. My father always called spring snow poor man's fertilizer. I think of him on...
